The Imo State Government has commenced extensive rehabilitation and infrastructural upgrade works at the former General Hospital, Okigwe, following its recent elevation to the status of a Federal Medical Centre (FMC).
The intervention, which is part of efforts to ensure a smooth operational takeoff of the new Federal Medical Centre, reflects the commitment of the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma toward strengthening healthcare delivery and expanding access to quality medical services within the state and beyond.
Sources within government circles disclosed that the transition of the facility into a Federal Medical Centre was achieved through strategic engagements and sustained collaboration between the Imo State Government and relevant federal authorities.
Rather than limiting its role to securing the federal approval, the state government has now embarked on a broad recovery and modernization exercise aimed at repositioning the health institution to meet federal standards before full operations commence.
Already, several critical structures within the hospital premises are undergoing rehabilitation and upgrading.
Among the facilities currently receiving attention are the male and female wards, paediatric units, doctors’ residential quarters, and the administrative complex designated for the Chief Medical Director.
In addition to the rehabilitation of hospital structures, work has also commenced on drainage channels and erosion control systems within the facility to improve environmental safety and prevent future infrastructural damage.
A new security gatehouse has equally been constructed as part of measures to strengthen security and create a safer atmosphere for patients, medical personnel, and visitors.
Government officials familiar with the project revealed that the state is also investing in the procurement of modern medical equipment to support the effective takeoff of the Federal Medical Centre.
The equipment reportedly includes hospital beds, surgical instruments, intensive care units, paediatric medical supplies, and other essential healthcare facilities expected in a standard federal medical institution.
Observers say the intervention demonstrates the determination of the Uzodimma administration to ensure that the newly upgraded FMC begins operations on a strong foundation rather than inheriting obsolete or deteriorated infrastructure.
Stakeholders within Okigwe Zone and the wider Imo community have continued to commend the development, describing it as a major milestone capable of improving healthcare access, creating employment opportunities, and reducing the burden of medical referrals outside the state.
Medical professionals and community leaders have also noted that the establishment of a functional Federal Medical Centre in Okigwe could significantly boost specialized healthcare services in the region while complementing ongoing reforms in the health sector.
