The Imo State Police Command has initiated a full-scale search and rescue operation following the abduction of a student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Miss Mary Ezinwayi Uzoma. The development has heightened security attention within the Owerri West axis and surrounding communities.
According to reports, the 17-year-old undergraduate, a 100-level student of Microbiology, was abducted along the FUTO–Ihiagwa Road, an area that has recently attracted security concerns. In response, the Police Command swiftly mobilized its operatives to the scene, commencing immediate combing of nearby bushes and adjoining locations in a bid to track the perpetrators and locate the victim.
The Command confirmed that the operation is being executed in collaboration with local vigilante groups, reflecting a coordinated approach aimed at enhancing ground-level intelligence and operational effectiveness. This synergy is expected to improve response time and increase the chances of a successful rescue.
In an official statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, has directed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to assume control of the investigation. The unit has been tasked with sustaining intelligence-driven operations in partnership with other security agencies.
The directive, according to the Command, forms part of broader proactive strategies designed to ensure the safe recovery of the victim and the prompt apprehension of those responsible for the crime. Authorities have emphasized that all available resources are being deployed to achieve this objective.
In addition, security presence has been significantly reinforced around the FUTO corridor and neighboring communities. This includes increased patrols, enhanced surveillance, and visible policing measures aimed at deterring further criminal activity and reassuring residents.
