ANIM STATE: SOUTH EAST LEADERS MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE

By; Dr. David Nwaenyi

The unanimous adoption of ANIM State as the sixth state of the South East geopolitical zone stands as a landmark decision in Nigeria’s democratic and federal evolution. It reflects courage, foresight, and an unambiguous statement by South East leaders to correct a structural imbalance that has endured since the creation of the present state framework.

For too long, the South East has remained the only geopolitical zone with five states, while others enjoy six or more. This anomaly has had far-reaching consequences; fewer representatives in the National Assembly, reduced access to federal institutions, limited influence in national decision-making, and a persistent sense of political marginalization.

The choice of #ANIMState directly confronts this inequity and reasserts the principle that no region should be structurally disadvantaged within the Nigerian federation.

The significance of this decision lies not merely in the creation of an additional administrative unit, but in what it represents; #equity, #inclusion, and balance. By endorsing ANIM State, South East leaders have demonstrated political maturity and unity of purpose, choosing collective progress over parochial considerations. This outcome was the product of extensive consultations, public engagements, and rigorous evaluation of competing proposals, culminating in a consensus that reflects the will of the people.

In this regard, the Imo State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, the Executive Governor of Imo State, deserves special commendation. The Governor’s constructive engagement, political goodwill, and support for dialogue were instrumental in advancing the process to its current stage. His administration provided a stabilising influence that allowed stakeholders to focus on consensus rather than contention. This statesmanlike approach shows a holistic devotion to regional development and democratic responsibility.

Equally deserving of recognition are members of the South East Caucus of the National Assembly, traditional rulers, community leaders, youth and women groups, professionals, and civil society organisations who played active roles in shaping the outcome. Many stakeholders made difficult sacrifices, subordinating narrow interests and historical preferences to achieve a unified position.

The unanimous selection of ANIM State is a testament to the power of dialogue, compromise, and shared vision.

The process itself was inclusive and transparent. Public hearings and stakeholder consultations ensured that voices from the affected areas were heard and their concerns carefully considered. Rather than an imposed outcome, the ANIM proposal emerged through persuasion, evidence, and collective reasoning. This legitimacy is one of its greatest strengths and provides a strong foundation for future governance.

For the people of the proposed ANIM State and the wider South East, this development carries profound promise. ANIM State will enhance political participation, bring governance closer to the people, and accelerate socio-economic development. It will improve access to infrastructure, strengthen security architecture, expand opportunities for youth and women, and unlock the region’s vast human and natural resource potential. Above all, it will restore a sense of belonging and recognition to communities that have long sought equitable representation.

At the national level, the creation of ANIM State aligns squarely with Nigeria’s constitutional ideals. It strengthens the federation by correcting an obvious imbalance and reinforcing the principle of fairness among the constituent units. As aptly observed by Senator Osita Izunaso, sponsor of the ANIM State Creation Bill, “ANIM state creation will bring equity and restore political balance in Nigeria’s structure.” This statement captures both the regional necessity and the national importance of the initiative.

History will likely judge this moment as a turning point; when South East leaders rose above division and chose #unity, justice, and the future. The choice of ANIM State is not only right; it is timely, rational, and just. With sustained goodwill and national support, it promises to deliver enduring benefits to the South East and to Nigeria as a whole.
