Essence of Democracy Lies in the Sovereignty of the People, Accountability – Comr. Nnamdi Iyioku

President of Sociology and Anthropology Class of 2001/2002, Imo State University, Owerri, Comrade Nnamdi Iyioku has made it clear that democracy can be sustained in Nigeria only when the Sovereignty of the masses are upheld with government being accountable for every of its actions.

Comrade Nnamdi Iyioku who is fondly called Chairman Nwangele made this call while felicitating with the members of his class and Nigerians in general during the democracy day celebration.

According to the Ideato South born leader, “democracy is a system of government in which power belongs to the people. Democracy means Citizens elect their leaders through voting, rather than having power concentration in one ruler or dictator”.

“As we Nigerians marks Democracy day today, we celebrate the enduring spirit, resilience, and underwavering determination of our people. We are reminded that the essence of democracy lies in the sovereignty of the people and the accountability of leaders to those they serve and true democracy thrive on responsible leadership, not godfatherism”.

“Democracy flourishes when leaders emerge through merit, competence, integrity and the genuine support of the people rather than through the influence and control of godfathers”.

“Again, democracy was never intended to be a system where a few powerful individuals determine the fate of many. Rather it is a system that empowers citizens to freely choose leaders who will represent their interests and work for the common good. The growing insecurity across our communities demands urgent, decisive, proactive and sustainable action from the government at all levels to nip it in the bud. The primary responsibility of any government anywhere in the world is to protect lives and properties of the citizens without any form of compromised”.

“Leaders at all levels should place the interests of the people above their personal and political interests. The true essence of democracy lies in the service, transparency, probity and accountability and inclusive development that will benefit all Nigerians at all levels and generations yet unborn. The government should champion policies and programmes that will promote development, create opportunities for the youth, empower women, strengthened local economies and democratic principles and the rule of law in enhancing and deepening democracy at all levels in Nigeria”.

“Furthermore, democracy is not sustained by use of political thuggery, vote-buying, tokenism, or by the distribution of Rice and cooking oil during elections”.

“Finally, as we celebrate Democracy day, let us recommit ourselves to building a political culture founded on integrity, competence where every citizen can aspire to a better future and service to the people. Let us reject every form of political manipulation and a democracy that truly reflects the will and aspirations of the citizens for a stitch in time saves nine”. He concluded.
