In the run-up to the 2015 general elections, there were many incidents of security breaches, especially in the North.
The Chibok Girls incident which gripped the attention of the world was one of them. Many of our gallant security personnel lost their lives in situations that raised critical questions about the extent of infiltration into our security apparatus by these terrorists.
I ran a series on “Nonso” a combatant of the Nigerian Army, who told me stories of how their positions and operational plans were sold out to terrorists, thereby, endangering the lives of many of our gallant and patriotic soldiers. Of course, Nonso, was not his real name, but I shared a lot of the things he told me here, including his warning that the Boko Haram had been hijacked by politicians and most of those attacks were aimed at embarrassing the Jonathan administration and sending him out of power.
“Nonso” is an Igbo boy and a dear friend, who is today, a lieutenant in the army. I remember one chillingly serious warning he sent me one day from his base in Borno; “Frank, if you guys ever allow these terrorists to push Jonathan out of power, you would have succeeded in rewarding terror and it might never end.” He also warned that “Igbos would become like tissue papers in Nigerian politics if Jonathan lost the election.
Jonathan was pursuing some audacious reforms during his presidency, including attempts at removing fuel subsidy and floating the Naira. Some dangerous cabals whose corrupt business interests were threatened by these reforms organised themselves into emergency opposition politicians and began to sponsor all kinds of attacks against Nigerians in order to route President Jonathan out of power. Unfortunately, they succeeded.
Many of those who were used to achieve that have come out to confess their roles in the massive slaughtering of Nigerians and sabotage of our security in order for them to get power. They have told us about how they brought Fulani militants from Mali and elsewhere to achieve their goals.
It appears that the same script is being reprised by the same people, just as President Tinubu has resumed some of those fundamental reforms that riled these oligarchs against Jonathan. There might be a conspiracy to oust President Tinubu, not really through legitimate processes, but through a direct assault on Nigerians. A massive media campaign is already underway to make the administration look bad before the world.
Those behind these conspiracies always target our kind and innocent Northern brothers and sisters. They use the North as cannon fodders to execute their selfish political agenda against Nigerians. They would always want to present the project as “Pro North” in order to mobilise the huge Northern electorate against the incumbent, but at the end of the day, these ordinary Northerners are abandoned and left to bear the brunt of bad governance while the ring leaders of this bloody political manipulation and sabotage relax in their covens to enjoy from the pains of ordinary Nigerians.
Nigerians must be wiser this time around. The blood of our innocent siblings is being spilled, our gallant officers are being sacrificed on the altar of politics, and our young girls are being sold off into eternal slavery because some people want to gain political power. If we let them, we would have rewarded criminality clothed as political opposition, and it might become a tradition in our politics.
Let us reject the lies and insist on issues. Let us reject those candidates and the political Party that are enjoying and probably sponsoring the massacre of our fellow citizens. President Tinubu is definitely not a perfect President, just like Jonathan wasn’t, but we haven’t got a better alternative to him, from the current cast of comedians, pretenders and sadists who parade as “credible alternatives”.
Nigeria Must Prevail!
